MaxMara S/S 2011: Milan Fashion Week

Though cool neutrals kicked off the MaxMara Spring 2011 collection, the show concluded with popping brights. The line primarily focused on monochromatic looks, color-blocking and a long, lean silhouette – all of which are major trends this season.

In true MaxMara style, the show began with a camel coat – a house symbol since its inception in 1981. This particular look was a belted trench, which foreshadowed the slender belts that would be featured throughout the show on everything from skirts and pants to dresses and sweaters. The belted touch helped underscore the emphasis on outlining the body in this season’s collection.

Fabulously cozy cable knit sweaters and double-breasted jackets were among the most noteworthy looks. Other pieces of interest included a slew of bright cropped pants with a seemingly scuba-esque inspiration – all done in hues of yellow, orange, and violet.

Many of the pieces had a sportswear vibe, shown through tightly fitted, color-blocked looks. Some of these pieces were done in sheer fabrics, which was somewhat of an unexpected direction for the usually conservative brand. There were a surprising number of skin-baring looks, including a bandeau top and a backless dress.

This season, the brand made for a unique collection that brought new ideas to the table, while staying true to its minimalist style.
