Matthew Williamson Fall 2011 Runway Review

For Fall 2011, Matthew Williamson was inspired by Russian avant garde artist Francisco Infante-Arana and the inspiration came through loud and clear everywhere from furs and prints, to the designer’s color palette and some weighty fabrics. Infante-Arana is best known for photographing mirrored sculptures against various landscapes, which fits in well with Williamson’s affinity for prints, clashing colors, and mixed textures and finishes – all of which reoccurred on dresses, separates, and outerwear in this season’s collection.

In keeping with what we saw in New York where designers clearly had warmth on their minds, Williamson’s collection featured furs, leather jackets, chunky knit sweaters, and ornate sleeping bag-style coats. For evening, the designer went with sequins, ostrich feathers, elaborate beading, and a Williamson signature to close the collection: a long, boho-style geometric print loosely draped gown with a high slit.

While the designer’s patchwork and prints tied into his signature takes on the classic hippie look, he mixed in tough-luxe pieces including quilted skinny leather pants to satisfy those looking for a slightly harder edge look come Fall.
