Milan is always the stage where the commercial meets the editorial. More than their outlandish counterparts in London, and editorially coveted friends in Paris, Italian designers have cornered the market for wearable but incredibly luxe clothing. With that, here are a few looks that stuck from this past week:
This season has been a story of texture across the board but this look by Missoni got it right. There have been a number of designers playing with palettes of pastels and springtime colors and it never worked until Missoni. The grey-toned pastels paired with the contrasting knits (and luxe fur) made this look not only fresh and modern but autumn appropriate.
It would be hard to pinpoint one element of this season’s Marni collection that was best because, frankly, I was in love with it all. From the geometric prints to the simply cut outerwear, this collection was the ideal quirky girl wardrobe. But if I had to pick a favorite, I would say the fur cuffed leather gloves were the perfect accessory to add much needed winter warmth to those cropped arms.
There are few street style stars that stood out this season as much as Marie Claire editor Taylor Tomasi-Hill. Her pairing of customized sneakers with super stylized looks was divine, but what really had people talking was a bright blue clutch by Celine, similar to this one above at Jil Sander, that she wore with everything. It was her constant companion and even paired with the most unlikely of looks it worked. Perhaps a statement clutch is all we need.
The whole fashion world, in Milan and otherwise, was atwitter about the mixed textures shown at Bottega Veneta. The deconstructed element paired with classic cuts and fabrics made for a modern and intriguing perspective on Italian fashion and the label itself. The brand has always targeted an older clientele, but with this, it is sure to draw a younger audience. I always said when I grow up I want to be the kind of woman that wears Bottega Veneta, but with this collection, maybe that day will be sooner than I thought.
The color blocking at Blugirl, even if on the most unlikely of fabrics, was effortlessly cool. The pairing of warm rosy pinks with cool periwinkle blues made for a high-contrast look that remained youthful even if the cuts were more conservative.
A definite gangster vibe was throughout Gucci‘s Fall showing, but it was the super glossy ombre red lips that had me reaching for my makeup kit. This season’s bright spring colors are great, but it takes real skill and class to wear a dark red lip such as this one, especially with dyed fur and a high-necked blouse.
