Hermes Fall 2011 Runway Review

With LVMH’s efforts to buy large stakes of Hermes under public suspicion that they are attempting a takeover and the surprise appointment of Lacoste’s Christophe Lemaire as the creative director of the brand following the departure of Jean Paul Gaultier, Hermes has made quite a few headlines or late. Lucky for Hermes, those headlines have often been made in tandem with news about the storied label’s astounding continued growth despite any economic downturns we’ve had these last few years. By the looks of the Fall 2011 collection, that growth won’t be veering off course anytime soon.

Clean lines, a beautiful palette of neutrals with some bursts of color and prints, and impeccable styling made for a line of ready to wear that could more than stand on its own against the always attention grabbing Birkins. Lemaire’s outerwear was particularly noteworthy. Whether it was a loose black jacket with a contrasting yellow and orange color blocked lining, a leather trimmed one, a classic trench, a tasseled cape, a luscious fur coat, or a blanket jacket, all were refreshingly relaxed while keeping to the Hermes spirit of understated elegance.

A Far East inspiration was another reoccurring theme throughout the collection with gorgeous caftans, kimonos, obi-style belts, and saturated color blocking making for a slew of beautiful looks that took on a luxe sportswear feel that is not only likely to appeal to the Hermes customer, it’s likely to flatter her body.

Minimal elegance at its best.
