Yotam Solomon Fall 2011 Runway Review

It’s likely that most recognize Yotam Solomon from the LG commercial that he was featured in alongside Victoria Beckham. What many don’t know, however, is that Beckham herself selected Solomon to create a capsule collection inspired by the LG Lotus Elite and that, despite being just 23 years old, Solomon has accomplished more than most fashion designers could dream of. The Los Angeles based Israeli-born Solomon has seen pieces from his namesake collections worn by a number of celebrities, including Kim Kardashian, Nikki Reed, Monet Mazur, countless “Real Housewives” and he dressed Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin for the premiere of “Dancing With the Stars.”

Solomon, the youngest designer to show in L.A Fashion Week, presented his Fall 2011 collection that focused on eco-friendly, avant garde designs – a rare combination. Shown at a private event in the Hollywood Hills, the designer’s latest collection was titled “The Drug & DNA Collection” and it was inspired by his past exposure to the Beverly Hills High drug scene while growing up in L.A.

Shapes and colors of various pills inspired the designer for his sculptural collection, which included statement footwear and on-trend color-blocked lingerie looks made from eco-friendly fabrics. Fittingly, design names ranged from “molecule dress” to “overdose boot” and feature details such as daggered leather, hand stitched overlay trims, and shaped straps resembling actual DNA.

In a press release, Solomon noted that he’s always been “fascinated with the broad manner in which the general public uses Drugs (over the counter drugs, illegal drugs and other supplements). Most don’t know what the side effects are of the medicine they take, while others don’t even know why they are prescribed to the drugs in the first place. Living in Hollywood, drugs pop up everywhere. From parties to gym session, you see it constantly. With major celebrities in and out of rehab, and some of the most controversial deaths involving drugs, it is an infamous subject. I hope this collection inspires you to learn more about the chemicals in your body and the manner at which it affects your lifestyle.”

It’s very rare to see an environmentally focused designer with a collection as fashion-forward as the one Solomon presented this season and with made-to-order ready-to-wear, footwear, and accessories available, the possibilities for truly original sustainable luxury goods pieces are endless.
