Livestreaming the Met Gala Red Carpet Might Be a Giant Mistake

This year’s Met Ball red carpet will be livestreamed, for the first time ever, on the Vogue.com, Amazon, and Met Museum websites on Monday, May 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM Eastern time. Miuccia Prada and Anna Wintour have promised to give interviews. Surely, I won’t be the only one watching.

Here’s the problem: the caliber of guests and gowns at the Met Gala have no equal anywhere in Red Carpet Land. The event is famous in fashion circles, but largely unknown in the broader world. Turning up the spotlight on the event and elevating its profile in mainstream culture may have serious repercussions down the line.

It’s only a matter of time before Joan Rivers starts vying for a spot on the red carpet, before Diet Coke signs up as a title sponsor. The increase in attention will transform the fashion on the red carpet: with more people to please, stars will take fewer risks. The focus will shift even further away from major fashion industry insiders, like Anna Dello Russo and Grace Coddington, to commercial favorites like Kristen Stewart and Lady Gaga. It’ll earn money, but it’ll be cheap.

*Sounds gross but actually amazing, trust me (or don’t). Make sure you get the navel oranges.
