Viktor & Rolf Haute Couture Spring 2014 Takes Us to the Ballet

It looked more like a dress rehearsal for a ballet performance at Lincoln Center than a couture show at this season’s Viktor & Rolf show where frizzy haired dancers wore flesh colored Latex as they walked in pointe shoes down the runway.

Featherweight fluttering fabrics, built-in bra tops and softly knotted and pleated fabrics made for the collection’s leotard and ballet costume-inspired looks. While surface embellishments were minimal, the designers’ team impressed with what they were able to achieve with Latex — not exactly a fabric that is easy to work with, especially when trying to create fluid looks.

The designers told WWD that they were inspired by a Bonbon ad with photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin that featured model Edita Vilkeviciute wrapped in ribbons painted on her nude body. The inspiration was most evident in a handful of looks that similarly looked as though they were hand-painted with fabric, bows and ribbon. Fittingly, the design duo was commissioned by the Dutch National Ballet to costume a work by Finnish choreographer Jorma Elo that will debut in April.
