Ruby Rose Opens Up About Struggle with Gender Identity

Well, it’s definitely the week for it. Following Caitlyn Jenner’s big reveal on Vanity Fair, model Ruby Rose has revealed that she also had a long-lasting struggle with gender identity.

Speaking to Cosmopolitan magazine, Ruby said, “For a long time, I wished I’d been born a boy.” The model slashie didn’t know there were options like “gender neutral or gender fluid”, which she now identifies herself as. “I later realised you could be a girl and dress like a guy,” she explained.

In July 2014, Ruby released a short film about the very topic of “what it is like to have an identity which deviates from the status quo”. The video, which Ruby wrote, produced and starred in, shows a blonde woman in heels and makeup, transform into a short-haired, heavily tattooed man.

“I cop a fair bit of flack for going from ‘such a babe to such a boy’. I wanted to share [that] story,” Ruby told News Corp Australia at the time.

Miley Cyrus has publicly revealed that she too doesn’t identify with being male or female. “I didn’t want to be a boy,” Miley told OUT last month.

“I kind of wanted to be nothing. I don’t relate to what people would say defines a girl or a boy, and I think that’s what I had to understand: Being a girl isn’t what I hate, it’s the box that I get put into.”
