There’s been a lot of iffy covers and remixes of prestigious tunes over the time. Think the time Yolanda Be Cool somewhat slaughtered the magnificence of Rodriguez’ “Sugar Man”, Britney Spears’ karaoke take on “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll” and Madonna’s stab at “American Pie”, to name a few.
Despite the risk, today’s musicians keep taking a chance with old classics. The latest being Lady Gaga, who decided to give John Lennon’s 1971 best-selling single “Imagine” a go at the Opening Ceremony for the 2015 Europeans Games in Baku, Azerbaijan on June 12.
Gaga sat at a piano which looked as though it had a serious case of flower vomit for the performance, and avoided her usual kooky outfits by opting for a ethereal white gown instead. Before she started singing she offered a salute, either for the audience who had already started cheering or to the late musician who she was about to cover, or both.
Then, around three-and-a-half minutes in, something magical happened. You’ll actually get shivers. Between “Poker Face” and “Born This Way”, we had no idea that Gaga had it in her to belt something like this out.
Avid fans, though, will know this isn’t the first time Gaga has slayed this cover. Between then and now, the singer has obviously mastered her version of “Imagine”.
On ya, Gaga. Our goose pimples are almost gone.
