Jessica Rowe Joins the Battle Against Skinny Shaming

Jessica Rowe seems totally relatable, right? According to her Instagram account, she’s a cat lover and, like the rest of us, does not shy away from a slice of pizza. We love her already.

But even though her life looks cuddly and delicious on the outside, the Studio 10 host has unfortunately found herself in the skinny-shaming web, a situation which many celebrities and models, like Bridgette Malcolm and Gigi Hadid, have also been subject to lately.

During a recent interview with Caroline Overington in the latest issue of Australian Women’s Weekly, the author addressed her own skinny-shaming experiences, which include complete strangers commenting on her frame.

“[More than once I’ve been] lining up at the supermarket checkout when a woman behind me decides to pass judgement — ‘Oh you’re awfully thin, aren’t you. Do you eat?’” she told the publication.“Why do I feel I have to justify my size to a complete stranger? Why am I so meek, mild and polite to this member of the body police?”

Despite the commentary surrounding her body shape, Jess has grown to love her appearance and not let the criticism get to her. “[I’ve spent] far too much time worrying about my lack of shape,” the 45-year-old explained. “But all the women on Dad’s side of the family are tall, lean and flat-chested.”

She continued, “I like my body. Sure there are things I would love to change. Don’t we all want to suck this in a bit, tighten this up and stick this out? But the older I get, the happier I am.”

Jess makes a point: body acceptance seems to be a long process for many women and unfortunately the process can be delayed by the body-shamers out there. As we enter 2016, can’t we leave this body bullying behind?

Thank you very much.
