It only took half a century but Barbie is finally evolving to include three new body types. The dolls in the Fashionistas line will soon come in tall, curvy and petite sizes, since almost no one looks like Barbie’s original body type (except for maybe a young Pamela Anderson). Barbie’s evolution, as Mattel is touting it, also includes seven skin tones, 22 eye colors and 24 hairstyles. There’s no kinky hair texture yet but there are a few new shorter hairstyles with voluminous curls.

“We are excited to literally be changing the face of the brand,” Evelyn Mazzocco, Senior Vice President and Global General Manager Barbie said in a statement. “These new dolls represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls see around them. The variety in body type, skin tones and style allows girls to find a doll that speaks to them. We believe we have a responsibility to girls and parents to reflect a broader view of beauty.”
We couldn’t agree more. US shoppers can order the dolls on ShopMattel.com starting January 28. They’ll launch at major toy retailers worldwide this Spring.
