Surprisingly, given that it’s election month, not many covers opted for a patriotic theme. The notable exception was Vogue , though it came at the expense of covetable cover fashion. It was, however, a big month for Louis Vuitton, which made its way onto a number of covers, as well as for Dakota Fanning, Amy Adams and Emily Blunt, all of whom graced multiple covers. Gigi Hadid also landed her second Vogue Paris cover of 2016. That’s not to say we didn’t see plenty of “traditional” models. Joan Smalls, Doutzen Kroes and Arizona Muse all gave us memorable shots this month, while Victoria Beckham and Gwyneth Paltrow continue to build their image of perfection with immaculately styled covers.
Here’s a look at all the aforementioned magazine covers and more as we highlight the best and worst that the November 2016 glossies had to offer.
The Glossies: All the November 2016 Covers We Loved and Hated
ELLE UK
Amy Adams' outfit may look sloppy, but it's always nice to see a fresh-faced, natural cover.
ELLE Italia
The only critique here is that the cover would be more suitable for a spring issue.
Vogue Spain
Doutzen Kroes appears to be channeling The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air .
ELLE
ELLE ‘s November 2016 offering is The Women in Hollywood Issue and features a solid selection of women: Aja Naomi King, Amy Adams, Anna Kendrick, Felicity Jones, Helen Mirren, Kathy Bates, Kristen Stewart and Lupita Nyong'o. Kudos to the mag for opting for diversity in both age and race.
Vogue
Emma Stone's top may look like it's Old Navy, but it's one of the most adorable Vogue covers in a long while.
Vogue Paris
Even those who are tiring of seeing Gigi Hadid everywhere have to admit that this was beautifully styled.
Vogue Japan
Let's ignore the Burberry look and just focus on Grace Hartzel's piercing eyes.
Vogue Portugal
Finally, a cover that does a good job at putting the focus on fashion.
Vogue Netherlands
Does Hana Jirickova have two black eyes?
Marie Claire Italia
It's not often that you look at a cover and think a model needs more makeup, but Hilary Rhoda could not look more bland.
Harper's Bazaar Germany
Joan Smalls kills it.
Vogue Ukraine
Not exactly desert wear, but Lena Hardt makes it work.
ELLE Russia
Forgettable shot and forgettable fashion, not exactly the makings of a great fashion magazine cover.
ELLE Spain
What is Miranda Kerr wearing?? For the record it's Louis Vuitton and should arguably never have been put into production.
Glamour UK
Sadly, there's nothing remotely glamorous about this shot, which looks more like a Delia's cover.
Vogue Australia
Though there isn't much fashion here, Victoria Beckham looks stunningly beautiful.
Cosmopolitan
Zooey Deschanel looks like she's ready for a holiday party in a fine enough — but forgettable — cover.
SELF
Shay Mitchell's Rachel Roy crisscross top with a VPL swimsuit underneath may be an odd combo, but it works for editorial.
Harper's Bazaar
Photoshopped to appear without a flaw...would we expect anything less?
Marie Claire
Nicki Minaj, in Balmain, continues to make a strong case for halting the demise of the cat eye.
Shape
It's hit and miss when you take Lea Michele's toned legs and Texas-sized hair.
InStyle
This cover couldn't be more bland.
Vogue UK
Emily Blunt's windswept hair almost makes up for her matronly look.
ELLE Canada
Way too heavy when it comes to both layering and makeup.
Town & Country
Dakota Fanning looking both stiff and uncomfortable.
Harper's Bazaar UK
Creepy, but at least Felicity Jones is giving us something different.
Allure
Velvet and curls don't sound as though they would hold much appeal, but Amanda Seyfried makes them work.
Harper's Bazaar Australia
Let's put aside the fact that she looks like she's floating over the chair and has a wax figure expression and just focus on how appealing Hailey Baldwin's Louis Vuitton dress is.
LADYGUNN
Laverne Cox making a strong case for the beret.
Glamour
Demi Lovato looking forgettable and Kardashian-esque with bland styling to boot.
Vogue Germany
You can't go wrong with Lara Stone in Gucci.
W
This is way beyond Photoshop. For the 10th anniversary of its Art Issue, W asked artists Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin to completely transform Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid for separate covers in what the mag is calling "Placebo Pets." Love it or hate it, at least it's a break from the redundant shots of the two we've been seeing.
