Just a month shy of the all-important September issues, we’ve got a mixed bag for August. Many familiar faces — including Bella and Gigi Hadid — along with (relative) newcomers like Emilia Clarke received top placements. This month also brought a number of surprising covers, including Nicole Kidman posing in a one-piece and cowboy hat and an international Vogue cover featuring a whopping 67 models, all of whom walked the Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2017 runway. Models were, in fact, well-represented this month with the likes of Cara Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn and Gisele Bündchen getting covers alongside more up-and-coming faces like Mica Arganaraz.
See which fashion magazine covers made our best and worst lists for August 2017.
All the August 2017 Magazine Covers We Loved and Hated
Harper's Bazaar Australia
Even when naturally styled, Emily Ratajkowski oozes sex appeal.
Glamour
Everything about this juvenile Cara Delevingne cover is messy, including the head-to-toe Prada look.
Vogue UK
Mica Arganaraz giving us the 80s — in a good way.
Vogue Arabia
Everything from the styling to Jourdan Dunn's makeup is stunning.
W
Taylor Swift or Charlize Theron?
InStyle
Bella Hadid may look great in fiery red, but the artificial-looking backdrop makes this cover look like a catalog.
Vogue Japan
Sometimes, less is more. Case in point: This Vogue Japan cover featuring 67 Dolce & Gabbana-clad models, which looks more like a tabloid.
Vanity Fair
A beautiful celebration of the female figure starring a pregnant Serena Williams (and a welcome echo of the magazine’s iconic 1991 Demi Moore cover).
Vogue China
Emilia Clarke is here to remind us that fashion is fun, wearing — surprisingly — Calvin Klein.
Cosmopolitan
Poor Miranda Lambert. This cover is at once cheesy, cheap and dated.
Town & Country
Ruth Negga, with her piercing stare and crimson pout, proves she's an actress to watch.
Marie Claire UK
Sophie Turner’s overdone eye makeup has her looking wildly hungover — and not even Louis Vuitton can save her.
Vogue Paris
Though fur — real or fake — is an odd choice for an August cover, we applaud Vogue Paris' pro-animal stance with a faux fur-covered Gisele Bündchen.
Marie Claire
This metallic Mugler top was made for editorial, but this shot makes it look as though it was Photoshopped onto an already over-Photoshopped Jessica Biel.
Vogue
Did Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik go shopping at a local flea market for this cover? (Nope, it's Gucci.)
Harper's Bazaar
Miley Cyrus reboots her look.
LOVE
It's hard to be surprised by a magazine cover these days, especially one featuring an A-list celebrity, but this Nicole Kidman shot did just that.
ELLE
Emilia Clarke, immaculately styled in Dolce & Gabbana, delivers with a sultry cover.
Allure
Emily Ratajkowski looks stunningly beautiful in this shot and her makeup and complexion are flawless. It's too bad all we see is cleavage.
Vogue Australia
The entire issue was dedicated to Dior, starting with a gorgeous shot of Bella Heathcote in haute couture.
Vogue Germany
Yasmin Wijnaldum, Anna Cleveland and Birgit Kos were awarded individual covers this month, each of which was a jumbled mess with way too many clashing prints.
