Dos and Don’ts When You Have Dry Hair
Don't: Use shampoos with harsh ingredients.
Bumble and bumble Gentle Shampoo, $26 at Sephora
If you’re not particular when it comes to shampoo, it's time to start thinking about what you're using to cleanse your strands. Many shampoos have harsh ingredients like sulfates that strip your scalp’s natural oils. Look for gentle, mild shampoos that are free of SLS. Better yet, pick one that has argan oil, coconut oil or shea butter for best results.
Do: Condition your hair.
Redken All Soft Conditioner, $14.99 at Ulta Beauty
Always use a conditioner after shampooing your hair to help bring back the moisture washed off during cleansing. Be sure to focus on the ends of hair, which tend to be more prone to dryness and breakage.
Don't: Brush your hair when it's wet.
Wet hair is elastic and weak, so brushing it can easily cause breakage. It's always better to use a wide-tooth comb and a leave-in conditioner to gently detangle hair.

Do: Deep condition once a week.
Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask, $36 at Sephora
Set a time every week to deep condition your hair. Deep conditioning masks will help maintain moisture and soften coarse strands. Apply the mask using a comb to evenly distribute and leave on for 30 minutes before washing it off.
Do: Protect your hair from the sun.
COOLA Organic Scalp & Hair Mist SPF 30, $26 at Sephora
The weather can be brutal on your hair, especially in the summer. Make sure to wear a hat or use an umbrella whenever you're out in the sun for a long time. You can also use sunscreens made specifically for hair for maximum protection.
Don't: Use a blowdryer or hot tools every day.
Revlon Salon Precision Grip Turbo Ionic Styler, $21.49 at Target
While hot tools are convenient to use when styling, the heat they produce can damage hair, especially if used daily. If you can, try to skip using a blowdryer or any hot tool for a day or two. If not, make sure to keep the temperature below 400 degrees and avoid lingering on one section of your hair to prevent the heat from burning it — and always wear a heat protectant .
