There’s no denying the fact Vogue Japan is a shadow of its former self, and long gone are the days when photographic duo Luigi & Iango would be called upon the bestow upon ultra-glamorous covers – one after the other. That doesn’t mean, however, the magazine is completely off our radar here at theFashionSpot. Over recent months, covers with Kate Moss and Anok Yai have had our undivided attention and for July 2024, Vogue Japan’s head of editorial content Tiffany Godoy welcomes none other than Angelina Jolie as cover star. Captured by photographer Takuya Uchiyama, American actress and humanitarian poses in archival Issey Miyake (from Spring 1989) in the cover photograph, selected for the occasion by stylist Yoko Miyake. The cover shoot took place following Jolie’s appearance at Guerlain’s ‘Women for Bees’ project in Tokyo. Angelina partakes in learning about Japanese culture and traditional techniques throughout the accompanying cover story.
Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:
“Now this is National Geographic worthy,” stated blueorchid straight away.
Urban Stylin didn’t think the cover was suited to a publication like Vogue either. “The cover is good but for a high-end travel or lifestyle magazine,” he shared.
“ELLE Decor much?” asked matheus_s.
“This is so try hard,” shrieked A.D.C.
GivenchyHomme pointed out: “It’s more Bazaar than Vogue, but I’ll take it. I like that they’re showcasing Japanese Artisans.”
“It’s a nice cover. Good colors, good styling,” approved forum member Alquimista.
“I like the architectural vibe of the cover,” kokobombon confessed.
“Not my favorite of Angelina Jolie covers, but I do like the muted color palette. I’m a fan of how the pale yellow masthead complements the cover photograph, and it all seems very well thought out. However, this does just feel like total non-event of a cover,” vogue28 chimed in.
