Top 10 Winter Scents to Try

By now, most of us are aware that hair and skin act differently from summer to winter, and that the best strategy for a problem-free season is to adjust our beauty routine to suit the needs resulting from dry air and blasting heat; but that’s not all that requires a switcheroo. While we’re at it, it’s time to swap out our scents to suit the change in weather.

Here are 10 scents worth sprizting to help ease the chills of winter.

1. Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Noir Absolu Limited Edition, $92 for 1.6 oz
A new take on Issey Miyake’s classic L’Eau d’Issey, this scent combines floral notes including lotus, jasmine, and lily with citrus, spices, and a hint of amber.

2. Jean Paul Gaultier Classique X Limited Edition, $74 for 20 ml
It’s hard to top the iconic Jean Paul Gaultier silhouette perfume bottle. The designer’s latest iteration is a take on his Classique X Eau de Toilette (itself a counterpart to the Classique, which was directly inspired by his Fall 2009 show). The limited edition Classique X is the epitome of Gaultier’s pushing-the-envelope style. The glistening black bottle is shaped like a female silhouette with a contrasting X between her breasts, and comes in a padded pink box that the designer is calling “a boudoir to safeguard her most provocative fantasies.” The fragrance includes notes of Bulgarian rose, tuberose, orange blossom, ambergris, and vanilla.

3. Michael Kors Very Hollywood, $45 for 1 oz
What an appropriately named fragrance for Michael Kors to reinterpret. The Project Runway judge’s latest spray is a new take on the designer’s original gardenia-based Very Hollywood Michael Kors Eau de Parfum. The Eau de Toilette has citrus and fruity notes including mandarin, black currant, and neroli (an increasingly popular note that’s popped up in Atelier Cologne as well).

4. Jo Malone English Pear & Freesia, $55 for 30 ml
Developed by one of the world’s most well respected “noses”, Christine Nagel, Jo Malone’s new scent includes key notes King William pear, white freesia, and patchouli, and like all of the brand’s fragrances it’s meant to be layered. This particular one pairs well with Orange Blossom for a fruity-floral scent, Vetyver for some added spice, and Black Vetyver Café for a touch of masculine depth.

5. Iris Ukiyoe Hermessence, $235 for 3.3 oz
The ninth fragrance in Hermes‘ Hermessence fragrance series was created by Hermes’ in-house perfumer, Jean-Claude Ellena, whose own garden served as the fragrance inspiration. The new scent comes packaged in a bottle outfitted with a purple Hermes saddle-stitched calfskin stopper and case, both of which are lined with the contrasting Hermes signature orange goatskin – talk about the epitome of luxury!

6. Aramis Impeccable, $55 for 3.7 oz
Ever since Tom Ford introduced his unisex line of scents, women have been scrambling to find men’s fragrances to spritz on themselves. This new Aramis scent is versatile enough to work for both sexes, with its blend of citrus and spice notes that work especially well for the heartier winter season.

7. By Kilian Love & Tears, Surrender, $225 for 50 ml
An ode to jasmine, the newest By Kilian scent is intended to evoke the feeling you get when you first fall in love. Fittingly, the multi-dimensional fragrance develops and changes over the course of the day. The particular jasmine used for the fragrance is absolute jasmine from India, known for having strong orange blossom undertones.

8. DKNY Fresh Blossom Juiced, $36 for 1 oz
For a light option, DKNY launched Fresh Blossom Juiced, a fruity fragrance designed as an ode to NYC, or “The Big Apple”. It has notes of pink grapefruit, freesia, apple, lily of the valley, vetiver, and white musk.

9. Lady Million by Paco Rabanne, $48 for 1 oz
The female counterpart to 1 Million, the #1 best selling fragrance in the world (even though it just recently launched in the US!), Lady Million is a floral woody scent with top notes that include bitter orange, raspberry and neroli; middle notes of orange blossom, Arabian jasmine, and gardenia; and bottom notes of patchouli, amber, and honey notes – all packaged in a fittingly feminine diamond-shaped bottle.

10. Tom Ford Private Blend Azure Lime, $190 for 1.7 oz
Inspired by Mustique (making it fitting for this resort season), the fragrance blends citrus, flowers and musk for a sporty daytime fragrance (Ford doesn’t reveal his specific notes). The scent changes throughout the day, with the floral and musky notes coming through the strongest.
