Red carpet beauty is often quite boring as very few celebrities are willing to take a risk while on the global stage. The virtue of the Met Ball is that it’s one of the only major events where fashion and beauty risks are not just welcomed, they are expected. This year’s event was as star-studded as ever and here are a few of the beauty hits, and misses, of the evening.
The beauty world is on the fence about Blake Lively’s recent hair color change and the verdict seems to be that she was better blonde. This beauty look would have suited her skin tone perfectly before, but with the warm strawberry tones in her hair, the bronze makeup made her look too monochrome. Starlet-on-the-rise Emma Stone has been praised for her sartorial choices of late but last night her beauty look stole the show. With a bright pink lip and minimal eye makeup paired with defined brows and a haphazard updo, her look was both age appropriate and perfect for the occasion.
While Jennifer Lopez‘s cherry lipstick and long lashes would usually be a home run, paired with the saturated color and constricting neckline of her dress, the colors clashed. The heavy application of base on her forehead and cheeks was evident as the tone of her face differed drastically from that of her body. It was not a complete miss, but a nude lip would have worked better. Gossip Girl’s Jessica Szohr played rock chick for the night but missed the mark on her beauty look. Her choppy bangs did nothing to complement the heavy eyeliner and while the lipstick color was pretty and warm, a smudged eye and bang trim would have done wonders for her look.
Leighton Meester is not known for her red carpet consistency, but last night’s look was perfect for the event. Her slicked ponytail worked perfectly with her strapless dress and the clean eyeliner and subtle lip color gave her an enviable Bardot quality. Another win for the night was Saoirse Ronan who looked sophisticated and age appropriate with her lob (that’s long bob, one of this season’s trendiest hair cuts) and warm eye makeup.
Mary-Kate Olsen‘s neo-bohemian style is often praised but it was her warm wine-toned eye shadow that stole the show this time. Paired with her loose flaxen locks, the red tones often seen in haute couture beauty worked perfectly to accent the color of her eyes. Lastly, it’s hard to even start to talk about where Naomi Campbell went wrong. Her overenthusiastic hair style could have been saved by a more natural makeup look but paired with heavy eye makeup and a glossy lip, the look was too much.
