In the fanciful world of couture, there are two schools of thought surrounding beauty; either it pales in comparison to the intricate nature of the bespoke designs or the creative team uses it as a tool to enhance or even match the extravagance of the look. This season, however, it was all about the clothes. It’s not to be said that the beauty was disappointing, as it rarely is, but it really feels like the creative teams tried to make the beauty looks work with the garments and not against it. With that, here are a few of the best beauty looks from this season’s showing.
At Stephane Rolland (above, left) and Armani Prive (above, right), we saw a look that has been quite popular over the three day festivities done two very different ways. Each designer separated the eyeliner into two very defined top and bottom lines but what’s evident is that this look can work great for night or day. With added smoky shadow and a bold violet lip, Rolland’s models looked futuristic and harsh whereas paired with a soft lip and coral shadow, the same eyeliner technique looks fresh and pretty at Armani. If you’re looking to get this look at home, use a stiff brush and a gel or kohl eyeliner and don’t be afraid to highlight the unlined area in the wing with a nude or light colored liner.
In a surprisingly relaxed manner, Elie Saab‘s understated beauty (above, left) worked perfectly with the collection’s glamorous eveningwear and Valentino‘s blush-toned beauty (above, right) look worked to enhance the collection’s ethereal quality. In spite of this being the Fall season’s collections, these two beauty looks would work perfectly for the summer. A loose wavy chignon paired with understated makeup is a universally flattering look and can easily transition from day to night.
At Alexandre Vauthier (above, left) we saw a perfect example of how red eye makeup can work perfectly in reality and proved that with a red-toned eye you need not avoid red everywhere else. They paired a warm, but subtle, russet eye with a bold cherry pout, but this look would also work well with a pale nude or peach lip. Now it wouldn’t be couture if there wasn’t some drama, and even if Dior‘s collection was disappointing, this beauty look (above, right) was a standout amongst the many failures. The sharp metallic eye paired with a cool wine-toned lip made for a look suitable for an ice princess with an edge. Get a more workable version of this look at home by creating a silver and gunmetal smoky eye and a dark lip.
