Wigging Out: The Hair Trend That Will Change Your Life

Wigs are having a major revival this season — and they’re definitely not your grandma’s wigs. Having dropped off since their heyday in the 60s and 70s, trendsetting celebs like Zendaya, Kylie Jenner and Lady Gaga have helped revive the transformative hair accessory as a great way to experiment with different hairstyles and colors without the commitment. Case in point: When BFFs Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid stormed down the Balmain catwalk earlier this year sporting color-swap wigs — Kendall in platinum and Gigi in a rich, coffee brown — the media sensation it caused almost broke the Internet.

Wigs are a great way to protect your real hair and keep it healthy. When done properly, they can look more “natural” than your real hair. One of the most popular and realistic-looking wig styles is the lace front. Lace fronts are virtually undetectable because they allow your scalp to show through, while giving you a natural hairline. The hair looks like it’s growing out of your scalp and you can part it in different directions. If you’re looking for a style with volume, look for a wig with a high density. And note, treat your wigs with care. If your crowning glory is made of 100 percent human hair, you have to shampoo and condition it at least once a month (more frequently if you wear it on a daily basis).

But most importantly, have fun with wigs! If a style or color isn’t flattering, you can just switch it for another one. It’s only hair. Now that we’ve covered the basics, here are our favorite wig brands on the market right now.
