We don’t know about you, but we are kind of over the whole overdone Instagram makeup look (heavy contour, eyebrows and lip liner). Thankfully, some of the world’s top makeup artists agree. When asked to rate the most popular makeup trends for 2017, many predict the return to a more natural makeup look, with a focus on healthy, dewy skin. Read on to see what other makeup trends these experts expect to go viral this year.

Skin That Actually Looks Real
"After a year of Instagram makeup — which is fun for a picture, but not translatable to real life — I think the biggest makeup trend this year is going to be beautiful skin that looks like skin," says Suzy Gerstein , a makeup artist who works with Julie Bowen. "Companies like IT Cosmetics are taking note with products like their new serum foundation that delivers buildable coverage with the skin care benefits of hydrolyzed collagen, squalene and hyaluronic acid."

Glowing Skin
"Cult products like Vintner's Daughter offer the very best whole plant ingredients to address skin concerns like rosacea and acne that would make you prone to covering up your skin in the first place," says Gerstein. "These products allow you to free yourself from the mask of heavy coverage and let your healthy skin show."

Fresh Skin
"For me, the biggest makeup trend is going to be fresh skin. I've started calling it the 'Instagram makeup backlash,'" says Joanna Simkin, a makeup artist who works with Issa Rae. "My favorite way to achieve it is to layer a liquid illuminator over moisturizer (my favorite is the BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector — there is a shade for any skin tone) and then a nonmatte foundation or spot-correct concealer over the illuminator (Anastasia Beverly Hills new Stick Foundations have amazing range and a beautiful finish)."

Contouring With Cream
"To keep the skin looking fresh, I like to lightly contour using sheer bronzing liquid or creme rather than powder (Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate is fantastic) and then just lightly set under the eyes and the T-zone with translucent powder (Laura Mercier is always a winner)," says Simkin. "Keep the cheeks and high points of the face reflective and your skin will look perfect with the just-had-a-facial glow we all crave."

80s Cheeks
"We’re seeing lots of blush on runways, but with an 80s twist," says Min Min Ma , a makeup artist who works with Nadine Leopold. "Instead of wearing the blush on the apples of the cheeks, concentrate on the cheekbone area and swipe upward toward the ears and temples with an angled brush."

Pink Blush
"Because this look is more adventurous, pick softer shades or something with a bit of shimmer," says Ma. "I recommend Lancôme powder blush in Shimmer Rose Cashmere , Maybelline Fit Me Blush in Medium Nude and YSL Blush Volupté Heart of Light Powder Blush in Seductrice ."

Modern Romantic Look
"Skip contouring. There's nothing romantic about it," says Kira Nasrat, a makeup artist who works with Jessica Alba. "First things first, create a barely-there makeup canvas by really focusing on skin. The more the skin is dewy and plump the better. Try the Sisley Black Rose face mask , it hydrates [and] smooths lines creating a plumping effect. After that, use a face oil; I love the marula oil one by African Botanics. Massage into the skin. You'll notice your cheeks will start to have a natural flush."

Focus on Skin Care-Like Makeup
"After prepping skin, I use a tinted moisturizer, I love Laura Mercier's ," says Nasrat. "Use a small amount just to even out your skin tone (if you even need it). Then take a concealer and cover up the areas that are needed — don't go concealer happy. Less is more. Try Charlotte Tilbury's . It gives a luminous finish. Then you want to highlight your cheekbones, cupid's bow and brow bone with the RMS Living Luminizer . Then, last but not least, use the La Prairie Cream Blush in Rose Glow (or Peach Glow if rose is not your jam) on the apples of the cheeks, eyelids and lips."

Grunge
"One of the trends of 2017 is 90s-style grunge rock," says Mary Wiles, who works with Banks and Dakota Johnson. "It's an undone, 'I don't care' look that's a throwback to a time inspired by bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam."

Personal Style
"It's all about personal style now," says Wiles. "It could be eyeliner smudged through the lashes, clumpy mascara, no foundation or replaced by a BB cream, a touch of glitter on the lid, or a brush of color on the lid or lip to add an edge to your look."

Bold Eyes
"Bold eye colors that you would see in the 80s are in right now," says Sarah Tanno, a makeup artist who works with Lady Gaga. "Marc Jacobs Beauty has new Highliner Gel Eye Crayons in matte bold colors. They're waterproof, super high-impact colors that are perfect for adding a pop of color or going bold and rimming your entire eye like you may have seen on the runway."

Unexpected Eyeshadow Colors
"Expect to see beautiful color swatches this year," says Ma. "Have fun and go for unexpected eye shades in pinks, peaches and violets and skip your traditional powdered eyeshadows."

Gel Shadows
"Go for creams and gels as they give more of a translucent feel and in turn, it’s easier to wear day or night," says Ma. "Check out Lancôme Ombre Hypnôse Stylo in Passion Passiflore , Maybelline Metal 24HR Cream Gel Eyeshadow in Inked in Pink and Tom Ford Cream Color For Eyes in Midnight Violet . Simply use your fingertip to apply and smudge."

Lip Gloss Makes a Comeback
"I think one of the biggest trends for 2017 will be the return of lip gloss," says Robert Greene from Honey Artists. "Liquid mattes have dominated the market and I think the youthful appeal of lip gloss will be a new way to add shine and dimension and moisture. The great thing about this trend is how affordable it could be. There are so many drugstore options that are fantastic."

Glossy Lips
"As a professional, lip gloss is a multipurpose product in my kit," says Greene. "I love using clear gloss to highlight the skin, like the wet n wild Glassy Gloss Lip Gel , which has such a great price point."
