Last night’s
Oscars marked the close of award season. Needless to say, Hollywood’s best and brightest did not pass up this last occasion to shine. Beauty-wise, stars played to their strengths. Makeup choices ranged from minimal to traditional. (Sounds pretty blah, but trust us, the crowd looked
great .) Glowing skin, smoky eyes, ruby shadow, crimson pouts and peachy hues prevailed. As far as hair goes, many (Jessica Biel, Emma Stone) played it safe with classic, elegant looks. Others (Janelle Monáe, Ruth Negga) had fun with accessories. Still others (Scarlett Johansson, Alicia Vikander) got more experimental with their coifs.

Best/Worst Oscars Beauty
Best: Ruth Negga
Ruth Negga's ruby tiara was the perfect complement to her burgundy lips and custom Valentino gown. (Our favorite accessory of the night? The Loving actress' ACLU ribbon.)
Best: Janelle Monáe
For Janelle Monáe's first trip to the Academy Awards, the queen of statement hair accessories did not disappoint. Janelle won the evening's informal headband contest with a diamond-encrusted Jennifer Behr piece, a crown to match her regal Elie Saab Haute Couture gown. Her fairy tale ensemble plus her newly debuted pixie cut took Twitter by storm.
Worst: Halle Berry
We're all for wild, free, natural 'dos. Usually.
Best: Emma Stone
From her golden-edged eyes to her bold crimson lips to her patented Veronica Lake waves, Best Actress winner Emma Stone was the picture of Old Hollywood glamour.
Best: Taraji P. Henson
Like Emma Stone, Taraji P. Henson's voluminous, sideswept bob and silver-flecked smoky eye gave a heavy nod to the glamour of Old Hollywood.
Best: Alicia Vikander
Former Best Supporting Actress winner Alicia Vikander managed to make our casual, post-gym top knot look impossibly chic. Her diamond-decked collar balanced out the easy style with, well, ease.
Worst: Dakota Johnson
Dakota Johnson's simple, half-up hairstyle did her no favors. It was plagued by flyaways. It failed to frame her face. Nor did it soften her austere Victorian neckline and heavy statement necklace. We say this with love: Bring back the bangs, girl.
Best: Ava DuVernay
This is how you do half-up hair with a high neckline. Director of 13th Ava DuVernay may have been snubbed by the Academy (for the second year running), but she's a winner in our minds. As is her smoky-eyed, orchid-lipped look.
Best: Hailee Steinfeld
Hailee Steinfeld's peachy pink lips, bold brows, bronze eyes and sweet chignon (not to mention her ethereal Ralph & Russo dress) gave us serious fairy princess vibes.
Best: Viola Davis
Best Supporting Actress winner Viola Davis' chic, razor-sharp pixie cut, nude pout and smoldering eye makeup made for one of the most memorable red carpet moments of the night. Her fiery, figure-skimming Armani Privé dress also set her apart from the largely champagne and metallic crowd.
Best: Jessica Biel
Jessica Biel's sleek, center-parted, left-leaning chignon was just as head-turning as her gilded Kaufmanfranco dress. Per usual, Jessica went with a classic cat eye and peachy makeup palette. Per usual, she looked gorgeous.
Worst: Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson's makeup was on point. Her ombre, rocker-chic chop was not.
Best: Michelle Williams
Manchester by the Sea 's Michelle Williams flaunted her shortest peroxide pixie to date — and what a difference a few inches makes. Otherwise, she stuck with her usual beauty formula: fluttering lashes, rosy cheeks and lips.
Best: Naomie Harris
Moonlight 's Naomie Harris stunned. Her sleek center part framed her sweetheart neckline, her jewel-toned eyeshadow brought out the honey in her gaze.
