For years, less-is-more hair has been in. Think messy, tousled, unbrushed, middle-parted beach waves, stick-straight lobs, free-flying natural curls, “wet look” lengths that glamorize the act of starting your day (or night) without so much as toweling off.
Well, by the look of this season’s shows, those days are gone (or, at the very least, the trend’s losing speed). On runways from New York to Paris, designers embraced the idea that troubling times call for whimsical, optimistic fashion — clothes, shoes and yes, even hair accessories that make us smile.
Some went the easy route, plucking our already twanging nostalgia strings. Scrunchies tickled the necks of models at Mansur Gavriel; at Versace, 90s hairstyles decorated Gigi, Kendall, Bella and Kaia’s heads. Others (Rochas, Fenty x Puma) asked us to repurpose ribbons and bungee cords (respectively) or give head-turning, jewel-embellished crowns a try (Dolce & Gabbana, but you knew that already).
We’re game — are you? Rhetorical question. Click through the slideshow above to shop this season’s most fun, runway-approved hair accessories. The best part? While hair posts are typically tricky — given that you, the readers, are a diverse set of people with a wide range of hair types to match — these decorations (with the exception of a few ponytail holders) work with pretty much all lengths and textures.

Turbans
It's fall. Temperatures are bound to dip (any day now). Heat escapes through your head. Swathe yourself in an extravagant Diana Vreeland/Marc Jacobs-inspired turban, look cool, stay warm. If you're feeling extra extra, add a brooch to the equation. (Note: Stick with headwraps that are Old Hollywood as opposed to Africana-inspired — cultural appropriation is never cute.)

Bold Ponytail Holders
Show your attention to detail. A low-hanging pony with an OTT tie says, "I'm composed and low maintenance and I know how to have fun." Sadly, Chanel's Perspex ponytail holders aren't yet available to the masses, but there are plenty of other options to, ahem, hold you over in the meantime.

We're calling it now. Bungee accents are about to be everywhere — all over not just clothes, but also hair. As with all things, follow Rihanna's styling advice and use the springy elastic bands to bind your high ponys.

Pretty Hair Slides
Well-placed, head-turning bobby pins took center stage at Simone Rocha, Versace and Maki Oh, to name just a few. Take your styling cues from the decade from whence these hair slides came: use 'em to keep your (center) part firmly tacked down.

Bejeweled Headbands
Add some flair to your free-flowing (or slicked-back) hair with a jewel-encrusted headband. The more bling-ed out you are, the less you'll resemble a 90s-era Hillary Clinton. (Her pantsuits were great, her chunky velvet headbands, not so much.)

Scrunchies
Like it or not, the scrunchie is back. We submit the following evidence: (1) Bella Hadid rocked one during a recent Nike press tour. (2) It brand Mansur Gavriel's Spring 2018 runway featured scrunchies made from luxe Italian fabric. (3) The oh-so-imitable Kim Kardashian was recently spotted wearing the widely contested 80s accessory. Style yours with a high pony (per Kim) or a low one (per Laurent Philippon, the hairstylist behind Mansur's look).

Statement Ribbons
This fall, statement ribbons — bought at your local craft store or repurposed after present-opening — will come wrapped around tightly woven braids, low-slung ponytails and updated chignons (like those hairstylist Anthony Turner crafted for Rochas). Note: Frayed edges and artful embroidery will make the fun, youthful accessory look a bit more upscale.
