It’s a new year, which means new red carpets. Award season kicked off in (mostly) high style with the 2019 Golden Globe Awards . It seems some celebrities’ New Year’s resolutions involved being their most fabulous selves because it was definitely shown on the red carpet. The fashion was predictably divine, but we would be remiss if we talked style without discussing beauty.
Many celebrities slayed with their hair and makeup. The Golden Globes is nicknamed the “fun” ceremony, which could be why we saw some experimental beauty looks in the form of electric emerald eyeshadow, indigo mascara, icy blue hair and braided space buns. (No, the looks weren’t all from Lady Gaga.) Of course, we can’t discount a classic look when it’s done to perfection and there’s a reason why red lipstick and elegant updos appear on every red carpet.
Alas, all the hair and makeup wasn’t on point. There were some questionable beauty looks that made us do double takes for all the wrong reasons. We’re hoping that these were one-off moments and all celebrities will be back in top form for the rest of award season.

2019 Golden Globes Beauty
Best: Lupita Nyong'o
Prepare for blue mascara sales to drastically increase over the next few days. The runways have been championing the colored mascara trend and now Lupita Nyong'o brings it to the red carpet. And she did it by coordinating her mascara with her embellished Calvin Klein dress. If you can handle any more fabulousness, see the mini braid hairstylist Vernon François wove at the back of her head using chain.

Worst: Amber Heard
The Aquaman actress is absolutely stunning, which is why it's hard to believe a hairstyle can distract from her natural beauty. From certain angles, it looks like a prom hairstyle that has come undone and from other angles, it just looks messy . On the plus side, the red lip is gorgeous.

Best: Emma Stone
Does Emma Stone ever have an off day? It doesn't appear to be the case. She played off her peachy pink dress with a natural rosy makeup look. Let's take a moment to appreciate those shiny cascading waves.

Best: Janelle Monae
Janelle Monae wins for best hat of the night — hands down. Even without the headpiece, her beauty look would still slay thanks to the braided space buns. Her rich gold shadow with black cat eye ties in the Egyptian theme of her Chanel outfit. Queen Nefertiti, who? More like Queen Janelle.

Best: Lady Gaga
Who else but Mother Monster herself would be able to perfectly coordinate her hair color with her periwinkle gown and make it look elegant? Lady Gaga's icy blue sculpted bun and coordinating eyeshadow remind us that her unique style can't be tamed by an elegant gown. Props to her glam team, makeup artist Sarah Tanno and "hair and wig art designer" Frederic Aspiras for nailing the look.

Best: Saoirse Ronan
Not even Saoirse Ronan's megawatt earrings could distract from her pretty makeup. Prepare for a soft-focus coral lippie to be the new obsession. Take a cue from the actress and wear the cheerful lip color with natural eyes and stick-straight hair.

Worst: Judy Greer
We love the idea of a hair accessory on the red carpet but, unfortunately, Judy Greer's stretched-out-looking-scrunchie-cum-ribbon and messy ponytail didn't work for the event. This is a case where "woke up like this" hair was too literal.

Best: Thandie Newton
Thandie Newton brought the disco vibes to the Golden Globes with her beautifully full 'fro and wash of muted purple on the eyes. Her hair and makeup even managed to distract from her mirrored gown. That's saying something.

Best: Lucy Boynton
Meet everyone's new beauty crush. Those who weren't familiar with Bohemian Rhapsody actress Lucy Boynton before surely are now. She provided some much-needed fresh lob inspiration with her artfully tousled, icy blonde hairstyle along with a modern take on a Twiggy eye.
Image: Daniele Venturelli/WireImage/Getty Images
Best: Sandra Oh
The Killing Eve star was the (co)hostess with the mostest, Sandra Oh gave us many enviably chic beauty looks throughout the show. She started strong with a retro-tinged beauty look that didn't look cliché. Her asymmetrical gravity-defying curls and muted red lip were vintage-meets-modern elegance.

Worst: Maya Rudolph
Poor Maya Rudolph is the victim of when bad bronzer happens to good people. There's too much color and it needs to be blended and blended some more. Her choppy lob is cute, but unfortunately it looks like the ends have been weighed down with a bit too much product.

Best: Dakota Fanning
Hands up if you were swept away by the refined Grace Kelly vibes Dakota Fanning was projecting? No one can knock classics like a red lipstick and center-parted bun when they come out this good. #Slay

Best: Lili Reinhart
Prepare to rethink red eyeshadow after seeing Lili Reinhart's rich red gaze. Her glossy peach lip and side-parted bun prevented the shadow from becoming over the top. Want to try out the red hot look? Makeup artist Adam Breuchaud used the Pat McGrath Labs Mothership V: Bronze Seduction Palette ($125).

Best: Laura Harrier
If something works, don't go changing it. The enduring appeal of red lipstick with fresh skin was demonstrated by Laura Harrier. Ariana Grande might have some competition with the actress' swishy ponytail.
Image: Steve Granitz/WireImage/Getty Images
Best: Camilla Belle
Camilla Belle's vibrant wash of emerald eyeshadow all around her eyes is nothing short of mesmerizing. The sleek hair balanced the electric eye look.

Worst: Francia Raisa
We totally understand the appeal of a top knot, but Francia Raisa's wet-look bun with wispy tendrils is giving us gym hair vibes. Her makeup also shows that it's tricky to find the perfect neutral lipstick . This one doesn't seem totally right for her complexion.
Image: Kevork Djansezian/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank/Getty Images
Best: Gemma Chan
Crazy Rich Asians star Gemma Chan has likely been added to a number of style crush lists. This classic beauty look will see her added to hair and makeup inspiration boards as well. Her red lip and ever-so-slightly-undone updo exude the same polish as her wardrobe choices.

Best: Caitriona Balfe
It's time to dig out the barrettes again thanks to Caitriona Balfe's elegant hairstyle. She upgraded everyone's favorite middle school hair accessory with sleek embellished clips and not an ounce of body glitter in sight. The barrettes will provide an instant refresh to any bob.
