It’s finally here. After the gorgeous beauty looks at the
Golden Globes and the wild looks at the
Grammys , it’s the Oscars. While a lot of people were curious to see who would (actually) win the award for Best Picture, we were eagerly anticipating what celebrities were going to show up in for the
2019 Oscars . After all, it’s the grand finale of awards shows. Celebrities save their very best looks for last and go big with their hair and makeup.
Many stars didn’t disappoint. The glam meters were turned up high. We saw “big” beauty in a literal sense in some instances with sweeping hairstyles and
statement hair accessories . Plus, there were a few stars who opted for dramatic hair color switch-ups. We even spotted some
fashion month beauty trends like barrettes,
headbands and
dewy skin .
In some cases, it seemed like the need to slay at the Oscars was too much and celebrities crippled under the pressure. The results were some questionable hair and makeup looks featuring overzealous uses of eyeliner and teasing combs.

2019 Oscars Red Carpet Beauty
Best: Lucy Boynton
One of the highlights of award season has been seeing our beauty crush Lucy Boynton's hair and makeup. She didn't disappoint at the Academy Awards with what her makeup artist Jo Baker described as Grace Kelly wandering through a rose garden. The "high society" rose tones show understated makeup can be oh so dreamy.

Best: Lady Gaga
We had icy-cool Golden Globes Gaga, rocking Grammys Mother Monster and now we have glam Academy Award winner Lady Gaga. Hairstylist Frederic Aspiras riffed on the classic chignon by weaving her hair into an architectural style. The minimal face and lip were all the better for showing off the matte gray tightliner courtesy of Sarah Tanno using Marc Jacobs Beauty Fineliner Ultra-Skinny Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Steel(etto) ($24).

Best: Yalitza Aparicio
The Roma actress positively glowed on the red carpet. Rather than playing into the mint tones of her Rodarte dress, celebrity makeup artist Carissa Ferreri was inspired by spring. She created a peaches-and-apricots effect using Arbonne products. The beauty look left us feeling peachy keen and even more obsessed with radiant skin.

Worst: Amy Poehler
Why so serious? The severe dark eyeliner and limp hair are doing nothing for Amy Poehler. We would have loved to see our favorite funny girl in some color and something fun. At the very least, she needs a tousled hairstyle that looks intentional as opposed to flat.

Best: Tessa Thompson
The Westworld actress isn't afraid of a lewk . She demonstrated how to enliven a vampy smoky eye and how to successfully coordinate makeup with an outfit with this gleaming look. The slicked-back curls were all the better for showing off the metallic makeup and her earrings.

Best: Laura Harrier
Add Laura Harrier to your updated list of beauty crushes if you haven't already. The BlacKkKlansman actress looked like the embodiment of a modern princess thanks to her relaxed bun and fresh pastel makeup . Whoever said pastels were unflattering and dated should retract that statement now. And we can't forget about the tangerine dream manicure.

Best: Emma Stone
Copper is officially our new favorite metallic after seeing Emma Stone's full look at the Oscars. It was monochrome perfection with the rich auburn hair color, the graphic eyeshadow and the sculptural gown.

Best: Rachel Weisz
Those in need of more proof that hairbands are back should look to Rachel Weisz's regal headband. Some might have expected the Grecian vibes from the headwear, but no one likely anticipated she would pair the band with a red patent gown. It's a full look we can't get enough of.

Best: Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron's jaw-dropping beauty look should have come with a warning about how fire it was. The luxurious chocolate bob will likely have many ringing their hair colorists as soon as the salon opens. The fact the hair is paired with an electric red-orange lip and a dusty blue gown, it somehow all works as a testament to her glam squad. Makeup artist Kate Lee and hairstylist Adir Abergel deserve mad props.

Worst: Awkwafina
Awkwafina had plenty of shimmer to work with thanks to her outfit, but the color wasn't the best for her. And coordinating her makeup with it didn't help the washed-out effect. The beachy waves were more of a step in the right direction.

Best: Elsie Fisher
The young actress is one to watch for style and beauty inspiration. Her sleek bob with barrettes is age-appropriate and on-trend. And we're going to devote enough time to master the graphic swoosh of black eyeliner.

Best: Gemma Chan
We are not worthy of Gemma Chan's elegance. The winged liner with palest pink eyeshadow and petal pink lipstick played off her hot pink gown in the chicest way. If you're charmed by the center-parted updo already, you'll be even more enamored when we tell you it was decorated with a "love" hair pin.

Best: Danai Gurira
Danai Gurira showed what a queen she is with her graphic headpiece and braids courtesy of Larry Sims for Biolage. The look was inspired by African royalty and Sims used a 20s Fred Leighton headband to achieve the surprisingly modern finish. Many would probably agree that the look also paid homage to Black Panther . Wakanda forever.

Best: Ashley Graham
The supermodel could sell us practically any look, but she didn't even need to strike a smize to make us obsessed with her Sophia Loren-inspired makeup and black-ribbon-adorned low bun. What makes us love the look even more is that it's created with Revlon products we can pick up on our next drugstore run.

Worst: SZA
We're all for a strong look, but SZA's isn't projecting the right vibe. Unfortunately, she brings to mind someone at the end of a very long prom night. The hair looks like it's one missing pin away from coming loose and the highlight on the inner corners is too harsh.

Best: Helen Mirren
There should be a photo of Helen Mirren in the dictionary next to "fabulous." Her look is a master class on how to slay the red carpet. The legend shows short-haired ladies an elegant idea for formal occasions. And everyone is going to want to copy her soft-focus coral lipstick.
Image: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic/Getty Images
Best: Amandla Stenberg
It's hard to say what we love more: Amandla Stenberg's hair or makeup. Actually, don't make us choose, because we adore the full beauty look. Everything works together so well. The swirling braids are fabulous on their own. What makes them even better is how they mimic the draped embellishment on the dress. And look at that flicked eyeliner.

Best: Emilia Clarke
Game of Thrones fans might have a heart pang when they see Emilia Clarke's chestnut bob. (RIP Daenerys Targaryen blond locks.) But any sadness will quickly dissipate when admiring the sleek hairdo and rosy makeup. Once a queen, always a queen.
Image: Steve Granitz/WireImage/Getty Images
Worst: Emily Deschanel
It seemed like the wind took Emily Deschanel's wispy updo a bit too far by giving it a frizzy, undone finish. What's equally upsetting is that her gorgeous blue eyes are being lost behind heavy black lashes.
Image: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images
Best: Kacey Musgraves
The singer's angelic makeup look almost left us at a loss for words. It's simple yet so striking. Even those who weren't crazy about her tulle gown will love the beauty. The sleek hair is what helped keep the finish from becoming sickeningly sweet or too prom-ish.
