UK Vogue April 2018 : Gugu Mbatha-Raw by Mikael Jansson

Gugu Mbatha-Raw Makes Her Debut as a British Vogue Cover Girl for April

One could argue that Edward Enninful hasn’t lived up to the hype as British Vogue‘s new editor-in-chief. After some questionable covers featuring Taylor Swift, Hollywood duo Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman and even the Steven Meisel-shot Gigi and Bella Hadid covers last month, our forums haven’t exactly given Enninful a standing ovation. For April 2018, the magazine finally embraces home-grown talent with Brit actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Photographed by Mikael Jansson and styled by Kate Phelan, Mbatha-Raw looks ravishing in red velvet Valentino.

Nevertheless, the cover still managed to pull in mixed feedback on our forums. “Beautiful picture and wonderful cover choice! Only thing bothering me is the layout… and I hope we’ll see a cover without that gray background soon enough!” said GinAndTonic the moment the cover struck.

“Pretty, but nothing groundbreaking. I like the flower in her hair,” wrote Srdjan.

“One step forward with the cover choice, two steps back with the actual design,” voiced tigerrouge.

GivenchyHomme wasn’t all too thrilled with the outcome either: “The cover looks more like ELLE than Vogue. She’s very beautiful, they could have done more with her. As Anna Wintour would say ‘This is Vogue, lift it.'”

“Guru looks great but the art direction on the cover still sucks – so bare and amateur. It kind of reminds me of those template fashion magazine covers people share on Facebook using their profile photo,” laughed magsaddict.

Our remaining forum members loved it. “OMG, love this cover. She is serving FACE for the gawds! So incredibly beautiful! I love the intensity of color, love the pose, love her expression and love that it’s Gugu on the cover! Everything!” preached happycanadian.

“Absolutely stunning, love this,” raved TeeVanity.

“She’s so beautiful and talented, happy to see her on the cover!” SallyAlbright approved.
