Cover images featuring white studio backdrops have been the norm at Vogue Japan since forever. Very slowly but surely, however, the Japanese fashion bible has been venturing out into the great outdoors and taking us on location. We travel to Mexico for the magazine’s July 2021 offering along with returning cover star Mica Argañaraz and Dutch photographic duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Captured down at the beach, Mica sports a look from Saint Laurent’s Spring 2021 collection selected by stylist George Cortina.
Ultimately, the cover didn’t sit well with our forum members. “Mica looks like a woman who escaped from a lunatic asylum,” said VogueGirl8910.
“She looks slightly deranged here. Opposite of looking good,” echoed Summer Day.
“She looks like the lunatics who chase after you selling cheap jewelry near Puerto Vallarta,” YohjiAddict pointed out.

“This is tragic. Take away the Vogue logo and the fact that it’s Mica and it basically becomes an amateur test shoot with experimental lighting by a photo art student in Bushwick. Inez and Vinoodh have really lost it lately,” stated Gabriel29.
Ed.. completely agreed: “Just tragic. I don’t mind Mica at all, but this cover is just meh. Can’t believe Inez and Vinoodh did this…”
“You need to travel to Mexico to produce this? It reminds me of some tropical backyard laziness in summertime,” noted matheus_s.
“Hard to understand why Mica is still a thing after all these years. Still don’t get her appeal,” voiced guimon.
WAVES felt the same way. “I will NEVER get her appeal also the cover is bad.”
