Apparently, I spoke too soon when I praised designers earlier this week for the lovely, playful videos they've been churning out this season. The latest high profile fashion video stars Abbey Lee Kershaw and her boyfriend's band, Our Mountain, for Balmain's diffusion line, Pierre Balmain. Shot by Inez von Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin (do they ever sleep?) the video shows Abbey Lee and the boys running around the J train part of Williamsburg, sitting in a cab in Manhattan, playing a show (Abbey Lee doesn't play with the band, but she does help set up the mic at the venue), dancing on the Williamsburg Bridge, and hugging on the Williamsburg water front, in front of a backdrop of Manhattan. That's just too many tired hipster cliches for one 1:22 minute video.
Apart from the fact that videos like this do serious work to make my life more expensive and fill it with more annoying people, versions of this Pierre Balmain clip have been on rotation for the past ten years, at the very least. It's dated, I'm bored, so just stop.
