I don’t want to be overly sarcastic, because money is exactly what Hurricane Sandy relief needs right now, and I think it’s better for the fashion industry to make these kinds of efforts (and to actually concretely help people that need help) than to completely retreat into nihilistic coke-and-diamond-fueled dens of couture and grey lipstick, but there’s always a level of comedy to DVF and Wintour’s charity and public good projects.
For Hurricane Sandy relief, the CFDA and Vogue are auctioning off “amazing fashion experiences.” DVF says, “You can have lunch with me, attend a fashion show with Anna Wintour, or meet Michael Kors.” You can also meet the cast of Girls on set, attend Victoria Beckham‘s NYFW fashion show and meet her afterwards, play golf with Michael Bloomberg(!). When I say “you can,” it’s shorthand for “if you can and are willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars, you can…” I can’t wait to find out how much Anna Wintour and Diane Von Furstenberg and Victoria Beckham and Lena Dunham are personally donating to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
Proceeds will benefit Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City (because DVF/Wintour are nothing if not Bloomberg fangirls) and similar organizations. You can check out and bid on the 144 available items on CharityBuzz here. Auctioning for most offers ends on December 5.
