Crowd Pleasers vs. Critical Darlings: Style.com/Print Ranks the Fall 2013 Runways (Sneak Peek!)

Like its Spring 2013 predecessor, this issue has no shortage of relevant content: The cover was pulled from a spread dedicated to Kane, which was shot in his native Scotland; there’s a profile on pop singer Grimes, another on Kristen McMenamy; a featurette on Chinese model Xiao Wen Ju written by Susie Bubble; an article by Nick Tosches on the subject of punk and fashion in anticipation of the upcoming Met exhibit; artwork and an exclusive interview with Rei Kawakubo of Comme Des Garçons. Whew. It’s nice to see a magazine pull off “smart” without being pretentious or inaccessible.

All the special content is well and good great, but my favorite parts of the magazine are two of the regular features, which appear from issue to issue: “Top 10 Most Viewed Shows (Style.com Readers Rank the Collections)” and “Top 10 Collections As Ranked By the Editors of Style.com.” It’s a smart way to mine the Style.com web content and translate it to print, and it just goes to show that in the new world order, the listicle really is king.

Very much worth noting that the most popular shows, traffic-wise, weren’t neccessarily the best-reviewed — but the overlap between the two lists isn’t insignificant.
