After launching earlier this year, Vogue Thailand quickly established a reputation for solid, well-considered cover edits, performing above the expected standard for a minor international edition of Vogue. After paying tribute to Thailand’s fashion identity with a debut cover starring Si Tanwiboon — the Thai model was styled in a gorgeous, golden ornamental headpiece created by master milliner Philip Treacy — the publication set its sights on splashier cover stars, seemingly in pursuit of global fashion media attention. The publication earned covers with a bevy of supermodels including Carolyn Murphy, Karlie Kloss, Liu Wen and Naomi Campbell. However, the latter cover, which appears on newsstands this month, proved to be the glossy’s first major fumble: the cover image, photographed by Marcin Tyszka, showed Campbell with lighter skin, leading some to conclude that she’d been airbrushed to appear whiter.
Vogue Thailand’s December cover, also by Tyszka, appears similarly overworked. Brazilian model Isabeli Fontana is wearing a severe metallic Balmain dress, her hair dyed with horizontal two-tone gradation highlights which were apparently on the cutting edge of gyaru girl trends in 2010.
