Since we were on the subject of fashion plagiarism, I popped over to the always enjoyable ‘Outfit look-alikes‘ forum thread, which documents instances of designer copying.
One particularly striking recent example: A black dress with multicolor floral overlay from Erdem‘s Pre-Fall 2014 collection (above, left), which resembles a runway look from Valentino‘s Fall 2013 show (above, right).
Floral overlay has been a running motif throughout Erdem’s past few collections (the label even showed a couple fairly similar black pieces for Fall 2013) and in many ways, this Pre-Fall look represents a natural aesthetic progression for the label. Still, the Valentino item is one of the best-known from that collection, and the similarities come down not just to the basic silhouette and idea of the dress, but also to the distinctive white tuxedo-style collar.
Erdem declined to comment.
