Wearing a fitted black puffer coat with a fur hood and “snow boots,” earlier today Cara Delevingne appeared in her Milan exclusive, opening the Fendi Fall 2014 show. The British model followed her Giles video selfie with another runway gimmick: she carried a furball resembling Karl Lagerfeld which had a camera hidden inside.
The Internet was beside itself, for reasons related to Cara’s enormous popularity and the profound marketability of Lagerfeld’s narcissism. But I object. Yes, Delevingne’s celebrity surpasses her currency as a pure fashion model and yes, catwalk presentations are giant publicity-generating organs for brands, but runway shows are supposed to at least pretend to be about the label’s creative vision. But of all the Fendi Fall 2014 looks, this one will be the most widely distributed of the entire runway show. And look at what she’s wearing: a coat. What’s the fashion here? What’s the story? “It’s winter. Also something about Karl Lagerfeld and Fendi fur.” Such creativity.
