It seems like Gareth Pugh isn’t the only designer looking to shake up New York Fashion Week. By now, we all know that NYC’s biannual fashion affair is more business-focused than creatively groundbreaking or experimental. The designer announced just two weeks ago plans to stage an epic runway show that’s expected to have live dancers. But his show won’t be the lone big production this NYFW. Opening Ceremony is getting in on the action, announcing plans to turn its show into an original one-act play.
Creative directors Humberto Leon and Carol Lim have tapped Spike Jonze to direct the play, which will be cast with models and actors. Jonah Hill of 22 Jump Street fame is lending his talents to co-write the play, though he will (sadly) not be performing.
We can only speculate as to what the play is actually going to be about. A drama about a hipster quarter-life crisis? A thriller about a fashionable zombie apocalypse? Or perhaps, since Jonah’s on board, the play will be a comedy. We hope so — if there’s anything a roomful of tired, cranky fashion editors need during fashion week, it’s a good laugh.
