John Galliano’s fall and return to the fashion industry has been well-documented, but today we get another view of what the designer has been up to recently. Vogue visited Galliano as he was putting together his first collection for Maison Margiela at the house’s studio in Paris.
During the visit, the designer notes that this is the first time in a long while that he’s attempting to live life and design without being under the influence of substances. “It’s great just being alive again… and every experience is new,” the designer said. “I’ve never done this sober before. And I have to keep reminding myself that it’s actually quite normal. It’s actually quite nice, John.”
Galliano also mentions that he found solace in teaching during his absence from the design scene. Four students from Central Saint Martins insisted on being under the tutelage of Galliano for a special program. The next year, four more students, three of which currently work with the designer at Margiela, signed on to work with him, which Galliano says gave him a release. “[It] stopped me worrying and thinking about myself. That’s part of the reason that I started to do it when I was coming out into the real world. It was fun sharing, and it was fun to talk to them about Modigliani and Lartigue—blank! nothing!—and we’re learning so much from each other.”
All in all, it sounds like Galliano has finally regained his footing, and we can’t wait to see what he does for the house next.
