Clothes Are the New Credit Cards Thanks to Adam Selman and MasterCard

We’ve all heard of paying for clothes, but imagine if you could use your clothes to pay for other things…like more clothes. MasterCard unveiled technology at the Money 20/20 conference in Las Vegas that turns everyday items into payment devices. Two years in the making, the mobile payment program uses microchips to transform “virtually any device” into a “commerce device,” said Sherri Haymond. Welcome to the future where cars, jewelry and clothes are the new credit cards.

To design cool tech clothes just in time for next year’s Met Gala, MasterCard tapped Rihanna’s longtime creative director, Adam Selman. “He is extremely innovative, really creative,” Haymond gushed of the designer, who collaborated on Rihanna’s top-selling River Island collection and created that glorious naked dress she wore to the CFDA Awards. “When we met Adam, his vision and our vision really connected.”

Selman joins General Motors, Ringly jewels, Nymi wearable technology and more as collaborators on MasterCard’s new innovative project. “Technology is vital to the fashion industry,” said Selman. “What sets the program apart is that it features the technology, while still remaining invisible, yet interactive and totally functional with the wearer.” Selman already created a prototype of dresses and accessories for the initiative, including an empire-waist dress with a microchip in the sash and thick cat-eye sunglasses.

We would much rather a see-through gown like Rihanna’s with the microchip hidden in a sequin, but this will do.
