Vogue Japan November 2018 : Elle Fanning by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott

Elle Fanning Tries on a New Image for Vogue Japan’s November Cover

After last month’s extraordinary cover featuring Namie Amuro, Vogue Japan is back to ordinary for November 2018 with a cover featuring actress and current face of Miu Miu, Elle Fanning. Unlike other magazines (*cough* US Vogue *cough*), an actress appearing on the cover of Vogue Japan is a rarity, with models being the title’s preferred cover subjects. Photographed by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott and styled by Sissy Vian, Elle wears an embellished number from Miu Miu’s Resort 2019 collection, complete with a bouffant hairstyle and smoky eye.

Make no mistake, our forums won’t be picking this up at the newsstand this month. “Elle is beautiful as always but… what a waste of cover,” said forum member jorgepalomo.

“Meaningless and lifeless, a supplement cover bought by Miu Miu, that’s what it is,” chimed in chanelh.

“It’s actually getting comical with all these super bad Vogue covers, and they wonder why print is dying! Do better!” Miss Dalloway exclaimed.

“They went from that compelling Namie Amuro cover to this? I hate this kind of on-the-nose image. ‘Oh, Elle Fanning is known for looking ethereal, let’s turn her into this rebellious, angsty young adult by asking her to flash her underwear on our cover’. Whatever happened to subtlety, fashion?” asked Ken Doll Jenner.

Also quick to take a stab at the styling was Benn98: “Shocked because this budget Avril Lavigne is not her image at all. And the creepy underwear? No!”

“That hair is a joke. They should have used a Shake & Go wig instead. That would have looked slightly better. Also, I wanna know who conceived this GENIUS idea of combining full bangs with a smoked eye. If you don’t want the readers to see her eyes, might as well have her wear shades. This is a mess,” disapproved MON.

“Her hair is eating her alive,” shirked Nymphaea.
