20 Times Apparently Isn’t a Charm, as Du Juan Takes to Vogue China’s February 2024 Issue

Is editors photographing the front covers of their respective magazines about to become a big trend in 2024? One month into the new year and we’ve already bared witness to Ina Lekiewicz getting behind the lens for Vogue Poland and now Margaret Zhang at Vogue China follows suit. Zhang has previously photographed the Chinese fashion title’s December 2022 covers and it’s a repeat performance for February 2024. In the process, Zhang makes Du Juan cover girl, which marks the Chinese model’s 20th Vogue China cover appearance since her first back in September 2005 for the magazine’s debut issue. Styled by Vivienne Sun in one of Christian Dior’s iconic bar blazer jackets, Du Juan rides a motorcycle through the city of Shanghai in the cover shot.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Looks like an outtake from a 2010 Estée Lauder shoot,” critiqued Urban Stylin critiqued the moment the cover struck.

“Could it be more amateurish?” asked OllieJE.

Also far from impressed with Zhang’s latest was forum member Phuel: “She’s a sh!t photographer with absolutely no understanding of narrative flow nor storytelling. Would love to be a fly on the wall and witness what the team thinks about her amateur work. What an insult to start the Lunar New Year off with!”

“What a gigantic mess!” shrieked kasper.

“Criminal to think Margaret Zhang had Du Juan and this is the end result! Some of Du Juan’s Chinese Vogue covers in the past have been flawless but this is amateur and lackluster beyond belief. There’s just not one redeeming quality to this – even that stunning Christian Dior jacket looks out of place,” voiced vogue28.
