When it comes to dealing with baby bumps on the red carpet, celebrities can opt to either embrace the bump or camouflage it – think Jane Krakowski versus Natalie Portman at this year’s Golden Globes. For the latter option, John Galliano delivered plenty of stunning options with his Spring 2011 Christian Dior Haute Couture collection and with so many pregnant celebrities, it would be nothing short of a travesty if one of them – preferably Natalie Portman – didn’t opt to wear one of the elaborately detailed gowns to the Oscars this year.
That’s not to say, however, that the collection was all about ballooning gowns. In fact, a number of the daywear looks were sleekly tailored to the body in signature Galliano style with lots of dramatic flare including sculpted collars, elaborate prints, degrade effects, and wrapped belt detailing.
The collection’s nods to Dior’s famed New Look included a gorgeous red pleated knee-length skirt that was paired with a gray, black, and white belted above-the-waist top. Accessorized with nothing more than red gloves and crimson lips, the look was truly unforgettable.
Also worth noting is that while Galliano opted to keep his accessories to a minimum, a number of the gowns were paired with dramatic above-the-elbow gloves – the cherry on the cake of this collection that referenced past Dior glamour, while looking ahead to the future with gorgeous draping, folding, and embellishments that were nothing short of designer genius.
