New York Fashion Week Fall 2011 Recap: Isaac Mizrahi, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, The Blonds

Highlights from day 7 and 8 of New York Fashion Week:

Isaac Mizrahi

Fans of Isaac Mizrahi’s now defunct show on the Oxygen channel know that the designer has an affinity for dogs and cake, so it was wonderful to see him play up the two for an irresistibly – albeit slightly gimmicky – Fall 2011 collection. Poodles in all shapes and sizes and models dressed like waiters carrying cakes on trays down the runway aside, there was nothing gimmicky about the fashions Mizrahi showed.

Ralph Lauren

The reigning king of prep went Art Deco for fall with his sophisticated eastern-influenced collection. I’ve been waiting for the Boardwalk Empire influence this season and it could not have come from a more surprising show. It may not have been drop-waisted gowns and three-piece suits, but the 20s deco influence was inherent in everything from the beauty look to the shoes at Ralph Lauren.

Calvin Klein

A nod to modern minimalism, Calvin Klein’s Fall 2011 was a fan pleaser. The silhouettes included A-line shift dresses, tailored coats and sleek trousers in a palette of grey, nude, black and white. Textures were varied and included fuzzy faux furs, metallics, silks and matte wools which added design interest to the monochromatic looks and simplistic lines.

The Blonds

You can’t view, interpret or write about The Blonds fashion show like you would any other fashion show, and I’m pretty sure that’s how they want it. Part cool kids art show, part Vegas spectacle, if you were unsure of what you were in for, you’d only need to remember they dress Lady Gaga. When you think about it that way, their Fall 2011 Collection seems rather tame.
