Inspired by Richard Neutra, one of the most well known modern architects, Derek Lam’s Spring 2012 collection weaved Neutra’s penchant for geometric but airy designs with his own signature minimalist, sophisticatedly feminine, aesthetic – there couldn’t have been a more natural pairing.
The collection, tailored to perfection, included looks done in both saturated shades of yellow and pink – two of the popular hues we’ve been seeing in the collections thus far – and worked in touches of menswear inspiration, another running trend this season, via shirt dresses and structured, but slightly roomy blazers which offered a welcome balance to the tailored skirts and tops many of the models walked down the runway wearing.
Among the stand-out pieces were black pants cuffed so as to graze the ankles with the bottom few inches in white, a white skirt with a panel of pleated white sheer fabric on its back, and in a testament to Lam’s talent, a silver sequin tile dress and a strapless jumpsuit that were about as sophisticated as they come.
