Held on the 10-year anniversary of September 11th, Diane von Furstenberg’s collection was fittingly titled Beginning. Furstenberg explained to New York Magazine that her “show is about the dawn, it’s about hope, it’s about life. It started with Africa, but there’s very little Africa left — it’s just the inspiration. But the hope, the hope! I’m promoting hope.” In front of an audience that included Valentino and Oscar de la Renta, Furstenberg presented her Spring 2012 collection that, true to the designer’s statement with its whites, brights, and prints, felt nothing if not optimistic.
Fanny packs aside, the bags were spot on with a variety of covetable finds including bright yellow box clutches, oversized rectangle clutches done in a range of fabrics, patterns and colors, medium sized clutches with a strap through which you could put your hand, and shoulder bags much like the designer’s popular Harper Day bag.
The show ended with Furstenberg hugging Valentino and giving out small American flags in honor of 9/11.
