I’ve never considered myself a Gloria Steinem disciple, though I’ve been catching myself singing Beyonce‘s “Run The World (Girls)” anthem as of late, particularly when it comes to hilarious women on big and small screens (Melissa McCarthy at the Emmys? Brilliant.)
Another case in point: Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham, with whom I had the pleasure of getting to know last week. The duo are the creators, writers and stars of the upcoming NBC comedy, Best Friends Forever (premiering in March 2012) and one look at the pilot assures any comic critic these ladies will join the likes of Zooey Deschanel (New Girl), Kat Dennings (2 Broke Girls) and Lena Dunham (Girls) ushering in a new era of on-air hijinks.
As if I wasn’t fan enough, Jessica informs me she’s also a Marshalls spokeswoman (!) and the conversation inevitably leads to sitcom styling (big ups to LA’s Century City Mall), bargain shopping in Manhattan (near impossible) and Italian handbag imposters (their loss, your gain). It got me thinking about the female style stars of my youth, when I actually had time to watch TV. In that vein, below are my personal picks for 90s Television Female Fashion Hall of Fame:
Clarissa Darling, Clarissa Explains It All (Melissa Joan Hart)
The Look: Vests, side ponytails, jean shorts with leggings (and leg warmers, natch)
Roseanne Conner, Roseanne (Roseanne Barr)
The Look: Mom jeans, vibrant print blouses, stirrup pants
Angela Chase, My So-Called Life (Claire Danes)
The Look: Plaid flannels, “lob” haircut, knitwear layering (and layering, and layering…)
Elaine Benes, Seinfeld (Julia Louis Dreyfus)
The Look: Socks with oxford shoes, oversized men’s blazers, long floral skirts
Nostalgia aside, thank goodness for a new era of television sans stirrups. Welcome, ladies!
