Royal Wedding Dress Nominated for Design of the Year

Beyond recognizing the excellence of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner or the iconic 2012 Olympic Torch, also nominated this year, the design awards look at fashion with a different perspective, which makes the fashion category in itself a varied field. Nominated alongside the Duchess’ dress is Phoebe Philo’s A/W 11 collection for Celine, no surprise there as the design elements were remarkable, Mary Katrantzou’s A/W 11 collection, and Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, the legendary exhibition at the MET’s Costume Insitute in New York.

As usual, the nominated projects and products will be showcased in the Design Museum’s Designs of the Year Exhibition, which opens to the public on 8 February, but before you get your hopes up, the royal wedding dress will not be making an appearance. Due to conservation issues, those who missed the dress’ landmark exhibition at Buckingham Palace last year won’t get another chance to see it just yet. Instead, the curatorial team is working alongside Sarah Burton and the team at Alexander McQueen to gather fabric swatches and original sketches to be showcased at the event.
