A lighter than usual schedule greeted guests during the final day of the revamped Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia. A duo of shows stood out.

Christina Exie
Australia's most recent Project Runway victor Christina Exie presented her debut ready-to-wear collection 'Bass' (part of her prize for winning the televised contest). The range is inspired by low sounds and features hexagonal cut-outs, glossy vinyl and the young designer's first foray into experimenting with print. The highlight piece from Exie's sporty, sleek and thoughtful collection, in our books, is a red coat featuring those signature geometric punch-outs. A version of her controversial 'trashbag' maxi dress returns, this time in a less confronting black rather than fire-engine red, though you'd still need a bold attitude to sport it on the street.

Zambesi
If this Fashion Week has a theme, it might be 'the decade' as both Camilla and Marc and Alex Perry celebrated differing 10-year anniversaries. New Zealand label Zambesi too was lured back to the MBFWA runways in 2013 after a 10-year absence. And like many other designers over the week, they played to their strengths from past seasons. Zambesi's collection featured a muted palette with hints of colour in paisley for women and plaid for men. Their utilitarian versus luxury aesthetic continues through uncomplicated shapes next to the subtle shimmer of lurex knits and a shimmy of fringing. The show was somewhat of a summary of trends in local design that we had witnessed over MBFWA — largely monotone colours, looking to our recent past, sheer fabrics, a little nod to grunge — and so, as the finale showcase, Zambesi capped off the week in fitting form.
