Michael van der Ham Supplies a Little Flower Power for Fall 2014 (Runway Review)

The Inspiration: A London florist who loves fall foliage.

The Look: Michael van der Ham continues his playful signature, but with some refinements. These are, by and large, rather easy pieces to wear — nipped-waist, knee-length dresses decorated with big blooms as well as graphic intarsia sweaters that are only a little weird. The designer’s collage feel was still alive and well, but it feels a little more street-ready, for better (commercial appeal) or worse (slight loss of vision). That’s not to say the looks weren’t great or super-cool because they definitely were. Think graphic button-ups, dresses with appliqué flowers and lace garments with really nice, saturated colors.

The Accessories: Tights in mustard yellow, ice blue and coral paired with playful colorblocked platforms.

The Beauty: Long, straightened hair, coral pink lips and icy blue eyelids.

The Takeaway: We’ll take Michael van der Ham’s strange genius any way we can — be it a little reined in or not.
