Versus’ Core Collection Doesn’t Exactly Live Up to Christopher Kane’s Work (Runway Review)

The Inspiration: Toned down versions of classic Versace signatures like the safety pin, and Baroque and chain prints.

The Look: Last year began what is being called “a new era for Versus.” With Christopher Kane no longer designing for the brand, it was announced there would be a capsule collection designed by guest designers – J.W. Anderson presented his designs in May and Anthony Vaccarello will show his pieces in September –  and a “core collection” designed by Donatella Versace and her wider Versace team. This season’s core lineup – true to its name – wasn’t rife with earth-shattering, envelope-pushing designs but rather dumbed down takes on the brand’s classics. Stud embellished little black dresses, fitted pantsuits, colorfully Baroque printed mini dresses, pleated minis and bomber jackets, skin-grazing leather separates and gold chain printed separates were all in the lineup, which included his and her versions of most every look.

The Accessories: All of the footwear was black and came in classic silhouettes including pump and peep toe and handbags were structured with safety pin and stud accents.

The Beauty: Side parted hair and heavily rimmed black eyes.

The Takeaway: The brand’s core collection didn’t exactly hold its own against Christopher Kane’s or J.W. Anderson’s work for Versus, but it was a commercial lineup of wearable looks.
