Elie Saab Dazzles with Day and Evening Wear (Runway Review)

The Scene:  Marie-Josée Croze, Emmanuelle Béart and Déborah François were seated front row.

The Inspiration: “Dark Opulence” and Mark Rothko.

The Look: Flying high after dressing Angelina Jolie at the Oscars, Elie Saab showed a beautiful — if expected — collection of red carpet confections; it’s hard to argue with his winning formula. Mark Rothko’s influence could be seen in the jewel toned color palette, which included rich burgundy, green, blue as well as black and blush; the show capped off, however, with a series of high-shine heavily embroidered looks. If there was one surprising element of the collection, it was that there was a considerable amount of daywear mixed in with his gowns. The show opened with a cape coat, already an established trend for the season, which served as a reminder that Saab can do daywear with as much sophistication as he can do eveningwear. Most looks were either done in monochrome colorways or degrade, but widely ranged in silhouette. Gowns were at their best when minimally embellished with pleats and thigh-high slits or strapless, cinched at the waist with A-line skirts. Also worth singling out were his velvet dresses. Velvet has been hitting runways from New York to Paris and Saab’s slit ones were among the most beautiful.  

The Accessories: Cut-out and peep-toe suede booties, strappy sandales and metallic box clutches.

The Beauty: Center parted straight hair and blue heavily rimmed eye.

The Takeaway: From press junkets to the Oscars, this season’s Elie Saab collection could dress a celebrity from day to night.
