Menswear isn’t just having a moment, it’s experiencing a paradigm shift. Just like in London, Milan runways were ripe with a trend that’s continued from Fall 2015 — gender bending. It wasn’t an uncommon sight to see a female model waltz out in a boyish suit, or a male model stomp around in a dress. And nowhere was this more apparent than at the house of Gucci. For his second menswear collection, Creative Director Alessandro Michele sent out an ambiguous lineup filled with romantic silk pussy-bow blouses, body-hugging bell bottoms and lace shirts that will undoubtedly be scooped up by female Gucci collectors and neo dandies alike.
But it’s not just the aesthetic that’s changing in the menswear market. According to market research company Euromonitor International, global sales of menswear rose 4.5 percent year over year in 2014, compared to the women’s market, which increased 3.7 percent during the same time period. Recently, womenswear brands like Moschino and House of Holland have capitalized on the upswing by launching menswear lines, while luxury and mass brands from Burberry to Zara have opened stand-alone men’s stores. And next month, New York City will up the ante by staging its first Men’s Fashion Week. Suffice it to say, the men have officially arrived.
