Much like Pantone and the Merriam-Webster dictionary, fashion and beauty brands have a tendency to define nude as peachy beige or tan, ignoring the fact that most of their customers’ skin tones fall outside this narrow spectrum. However, as industry-wide calls for inclusion grow stronger, many brands have begun to expand their definition of “nude.” Christian Louboutin, Naja and Nubian Skin are among the companies who offer their “nude” products in a range of hues, so that they may actually match their wearer’s skin tone. Now, mass retailer Target, a known diversity advocate, is expanding its definition of nude.

Target’s new Shades of Nude collection, which includes bras, full coverage underwear, thongs and tights, features four new color options: cocoa, caramel, honey beige and mochaccino. “At Target, we know that women come in all shapes, sizes and ethnicities and our assortment needs to reflect their outfitting needs,” Michelle Wlazlo, Target’s senior vice president of apparel and accessories, said in a March 23 press release. “As part of our continued commitment to inclusivity, our team did extensive research to expand our intimate offerings so guests can find the perfect shade of nude to match their skin tone.”

Target being a mass retailer, its inclusive underwear and hosiery hits a much lower price point than that of boutique brands like Nubian Skin and Naja. A bra will cost you between $10 and $17; a pair of panties is only $5. Per Target standards, the line is made to fit all body types, with at least one bra design going up to a size 40DD. All this to say that Target’s Shades of Nudes collection is arguably the most accessible, affordable “nude” underwear range on the market.
We know what you’re thinking. You see four models, two of them white, and one or two catchall dark shades does not an inclusive line make. Target’s way ahead of you. Per the aforementioned press release, the brand plans to roll out more shades for this collection this coming fall, as well as a line of nude shoes (move over, Louboutin).
Another day, another win for inclusion. Head over to Target.com to check out the full Shades of Nude collection.
