A career highlight for McCartney, the designer talked to ELLE UK about the path that led her to the honor. She revealed that earlier in her career she took the initiative to approach celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna to ask if she could dress them for special events, but this time around, Markle approached her to design the dress.

Markle is no stranger to McCartney’s work. She’s worn other pieces by the designer, including a black coat worn to a royal event in Wales.  and asked McCartney to dress her again. “She wore other pieces of mine and we had a friendship. And then she asked me to do her second wedding dress. I was honored and I still am,” she says.

The designer suspects that the reason why Markle chose her to design the dress had something to do with the duchess hoping to support women in the fashion industry. “Obviously I am a British designer, but I think being a woman and being a women’s woman played a part,” she says. “It’s a big deal.” We couldn’t agree more.
